KVLL/KISD TV 18 goes on tour with ‘Imagine’

- Saying “No” to alcohol and saying “No” to drinking and driving was the message H.M. King High School Media Technology students conveyed to schools in the Lower Rio Grande Valley recently as the movie “Imagine” went on tour for the first time.
The tour, which was sponsored by the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission, Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Transportation, Albert Benitez and Dr. Denise Hutchinson, was set up for students to see the dangers of drinking alcohol and getting behind the wheel when intoxicated.
“It’s hard to believe that Texas is the second largest state in the country with alcohol related fatalities,” said William Waddill, Media Technology instructor.
“If we can make a difference early in their lives we can make a difference in the rest of their lives.”
King High media students traveled to Brownsville Rivera, Pharr/San Juan/Alamo, Harlingen North and South schools during the tour.
They gave speeches and testimonials about the consequences of drinking and driving, also had students simulate being intoxicated and showed the movie.
“There was a really good reception and I believe we touched some kids’ lives,” tour manager Renee Connor said.
“There is an alternative and you can have fun without drinking.”
Students who participated besides Connor were Homero Garza, Wolfgang Schwertner, Katharine Rosebrock, Amber Govan and Amanda Hernandez.
King High faculty who participated included Benny Guerra and Waddill.
“This all wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for our administrations support and Benitez and Dr. Hutchinson,” “We thank them for all their help,” concluded Rosebock.
“Imagine” was created last year on a joint effort by then seniors Augustine Erebia and Andrew Barrera.
The movie was a deterrent in keeping kids safe during spring break, prom, and graduation.
This marks the fifth year of H.M King’s Media Technology Department.
The studios, which are located at H.M. King High School, serves the Kingsville Independent School District as well as the community of Kingsville through KVLL TV 18.
Media Technology is a lab based high school program for students interested in broadcast journalism and video production.
Since its inception, the faculty and students have committed themselves to bettering the community of Kingsville.
